Laser treatment for tattoos provides a safe and effective solution for tattoo reduction or removal. It is preferred by patients and professionals because of its outstanding results when used for the removal of tattoos and treatment of pigmented lesions. It is versatile and can safely be used to treat a wide variety of tattoos on various parts of the body. ​

How Does Laser Tattoo Reduction Work?

Tattoo application uses a mechanised needle to puncture the skin and inject ink into the dermis or second layer of skin just below the epidermis. Since this process involves damaging the skin, the body responds with white blood cells, which attempt to absorb the foreign particles and dispose of them in the blood stream. The pigment is then left behind as they are too big to be taken by the white blood cells, resulting in a tattoo. 

In order to clear the ink from the skin, the laser tattoo removal system creates an energy beam of light. ​The light will pass through the outer skin layers targeting only the embedded ink. Energy from the laser is rapidly absorbed by the ink causing the pigment to fracture into microscopic particles. Over time, the body’s immune system should clean the particles from the skin causing the tattoo to fade

Can All Tattoos Be Removed?

While the majority of tattoos can be successfully removed or their appearance lessened, there are a small percent that may not respond to lasers. We can advise you on your suitability and determine if your tattoo is eligible for removal during an initial consultation.

Every tattoo will respond differently based upon the size, location and age of the tattoo. Therefore, precise results can vary.  Some ink colors respond better than others to laser therapy. Black and red inks generally respond the best, while blue, green and yellow inks are the most difficult to remove. Cosmetic tattoos or ‘permanent make-up’ can usually be removed with laser treatment. Tattooed eyebrows, eyeliner, and lip liner can be removed or faded.

How Many Tattoo Removal Treatments Will I Need?

Generally several treatments are required for tattoo removal. Multi-coloured and professional tattoos are generally harder to remove than single coloured or amateur tattoos and require more treatments.

​For complete removal professional tattoos usually require more than 10 treatments (usually 10 to 20), and amateur tattoos more than 4 as a rule. To fade a tattoo (e.g for tattooing over with a new design), fewer sessions are required. Factors that determine how many sessions will be required include:

  • The skin type
  • Location of the tattoo 
  • Tattoo colour 
  • The type and amount of ink
  • How deep the ink penetrates the skin
  • How the tattoo was applied
  • Scarring 
  • Layered tattoos
